SMARTER CAREER PROGRESSION: GETTING THE FOUNDATIONS RIGHT

UNDERSTANDING what experience the best digital construction employers look for – now and in the future – is vital if you want to make the most of your career.

The smarter digital employers know what good looks like!

They want career-centric talent, within the normal salary range (see salary guide) and genuine BIM competency. They need solid experience to reduce risk.

If your job is to make sure models are accurate you need to know what ‘accurate’ is. You don’t just need to know how to look, you need to know what to look for – this requires experience, not guess work.

Employers need confidence that you know what you are doing and, as you progress, that you know what to do when the fan starts speeding up – ideally, even before it starts.

Too many salary chasers with less experience than expected have caused too many problems. Their options will become limited as more employers seek candidates with proven, solid experience.

The need for certainty in your competency will only increase as the demand for better BIM intensifies. As awareness of what ‘good’ looks like spreads, the best candidates with the best experience will get the best jobs. If you want to increase your options as you progress your career, and become more sought after, make sure you learn well with the right employers from the beginning.

Long-term, rewarding, career progression is built on solid foundations, not fancy façades. Make the right career move!

Here are four excellent ‘foundation’ opportunities with employers keen and able to help you develop the right skills now:

BIM TRAINEE: London: to £30k

Currently a small team but expanding. Excellent BIM leadership. Excellent mentor. A great opportunity to learn and deliver good BIM well.
