The BIM Coordinator’s journey to BIM Manager

HOW TO PROGRESS FROM A BIM COORDINATOR TO A BIM MANAGER

This is the first in a series of articles on the skills and experience the top employers expect BIM Coordinators to acquire on the journey to becoming a BIM Manager.

Any well planned journey starts with the point of destination. Only that will give us the direction we need to head in so we can create the BIM Coordinator journey with clear milestones.

In this first article we look at the function and competencies of a BIM Manager to create the point of destination.

THE BIM MANAGER’S FUNCTION

To ensure project information models are fit for purpose. The BIM Manager should enable and achieve successful collaboration between the client’s team, the design team, the contractor team and the supply chain. They can be employed by any of these and/or externally.

Note: Confusion can occur when a BIM Manager is also tasked with firmwide strategic responsibilities. To simplify, this definition of a BIM Manager is discipline agnostic – making sure there is no difference between a contractor’s BIM Manager, the design team’s, or others.

BIM MANAGER COMPETENCIES

The ISO19650 aligned BIM Competency Table lists the 74 competencies of a BIM Manager. You don’t need to read the whole list, it is simply to illustrate the ‘single source of truth’ we refer to for the career milestones. It is important to keep aligned with the latest standards otherwise the milestones will become pointless.

So, these competencies of a BIM Manager are the primary competencies a BIM Coordinator needs to develop to become a BIM Manager.

In the next article we break this list down into the milestones on the path from ‘Novice’ BIM Coordinator to ‘Advanced Beginner’ BIM Manager.
