Mark Stodgell at PCSG shares his expert career advice

Mark is an Associate at PCSG.  25 years ago he trained as an Architect, beginning his career in CAD and IT.  His early passion for BIM technologies quickly developed into an evangelical drive for intelligent, pan industry, ‘Digital Transformation’ and, more recently, a focus on OPEX with blue-chip clients.

TIP 1: BE HOLISTIC

Real life broad experience and not just BIM tastic Revit, Dynamo and PAS1192 knowledge is key… Knowing how a buiulding or road goes together, how procurement routes work, project management and writing skills, etc etc… Get outside of the BIM Bubble, the BIM Echo Chamber – network with everyone..

TIP 2: BE HUMBLE

Always know your limits and when to shut up and say – “I am not sure”, know when you need help, either specialist experience or just from someone who had been there and done it a bit more….

TIP 3: BE PRAGMATIC

Try not to be pedantic on standards – they need, in most cases, to be implemented sympathetically not just by wrote…

TIP 4: KNOW YOURSELF

Understand your strengths and play to them – and conversely your weakness’s – don’t set yourself up for a fall – perhaps explore something like Gallup Strengths Finder or similar if you are perhaps ‘blind’ to your strengths…

TIP 5: BE PATIENT

As a reader of many CVs I always wonder when seeing lots of small contracts or employment periods…..why are they moving on so much? Stick at it!
