MARKET UPDATE

In summary, thanks to infrastructure investment as part of the Government recovery strategy there is some optimism with infrastructure focussed clients. However, the same cannot be said for the private sector. You can read more detail in Turner & Townsend’s latest UK Market Intelligence report

Although this uncertainty will affect recruitment across the construction industry, with new projects requiring better BIM, it will have less impact on digital construction specialists – where supply is below demand.

SUPPLY, DEMAND + SALARY : SEPTEMBER UPDATE

SUPPLY
Unfortunately, as expected the number of redundancies have increased in August as furlough funding winds down. The impact continues to be greatest with senior level and/or central overhead funded roles. However, project-funded BIM specialists have, to a large extent, been protected and we are already seeing a shortage. Expect this to increase if demand increases in September.

DEMAND
The summer holiday season always cools the recruitment market in August, however, this year, despite the pandemic, we have seen an unexpected increase in demand for project funded BIM Coordinators and Managers. We expect demand to increase over the next 3 months – particularly with clients winning public sector real estate and infrastructure work.

SALARY
Underlining how tight budgets are, despite the increase in demand and the lack of supply, salaries for these new project funded roles have not increased. Instead, recruiters have been looking for candidates with less experience to keep within budget. Therefore average salaries have remained the same or even reduced where experienced candidates have accepted lower salaries.

Average salaries in other areas, where there has been minimal demand, remain unaltered.
