Digital Driven by Desire Initiative

Background to our initiative

We understand that merely introducing new technologies into our projects and businesses will not solve our industry’s digital transformation and innovation problems. Beginning with this key point, we worked to find a solution to begin our digital transformation process.

Our industry has been slower to embrace digital technology than others whether from corporate hesitancy around risk and cost, individual reluctance to change how something has always been done or fear of using new tools.

Cultural shift

We focused on building a cultural shift to allow our projects to implement digital solutions that increase productivity and efficiency.

A digital transformation process will be effective only when everyone understands the need for change; this will not be achieved by simply introducing new tools and hoping they are adopted.

Our aim is to create a fertile environment with training and awareness campaigns to enhance the introduction of digital tools across the business.

Our digital transformation initiative

In early 2021 we launched our digital transformation programme “Digital Driven by Desire”. Our driving force was a desire to do things differently; not because we had to, but because we wanted to.

Our goal was to increase the efficiency of the design, construction, and handover processes by incorporating digital technologies at all project stages.

The programme’s five principles

  • Make it Personal: We always match tools and technology to our people’s and partners’ needs. Never the other way around
  • Keep it Simple: The technology might be complicated, but the experience should be straightforward, intuitive, and enjoyable
  • Make it Better: Anything we introduce should improve our productivity, safety or quality, reducing risk and/or cost
  • Make it Connected: Everything should be able to connect to everything else
  • Make it Last: We plan for long-term sustainability – everything should be flexible, scalable, and able to adapt with our business

Digital Engineering Applications and Benefits

  • Since its introduction in March 2021 our strategy has seen digital training increase by 60%, supporting adoption of technologies and hastening acceptance.

Our strategy also emphasises the significance of using digital models to extend the benefits of digital tools and other ways of working.

We created a supporting campaign to emphasise the importance of using 3D models business-wide.

  • As a result, 90% of our projects now use fully-developed 3D models, up from 60% in 2020.
  • Since we launched our Digital Transformation programme the time taken to adopt a new technology has halved.
  • Using 360 data capture technology, each construction site can save an average of 210 hours per year

We determined this value by weighing the previous site documentation technique’s inefficiency against the use of new technology.

  • The total time saved for our entire company is estimated at 5,800 hours per year, equivalent to more than 700 working days.
