UPDATE 22nd MAY

THE NEED FOR A MORE FLEXIBLE SUPPLY OF DIGITAL CONSTRUCTION TALENT

Companies are tightening their belts to survive.

The optimists, who see digital as centre stage to recovery and winning work, envisage retaining the digital talent they have.  The pessimists don’t and see a culling of BIM brains.  The majority are in between and predict some thinning.

All agree that any recruitment need in the foreseeable future (3 months at least, probably 6) will have to be funded by budget already allocated in projects.  But how will other, essential, non-operational needs be delivered?

Although there is a declining need for full-time ‘overhead’ roles, I do think there will be a growth in demand for part-time expertise.  You can’t totally remove the need for some of the overhead work – some essential input will need to be maintained.  However, companies fighting for survival and in recovery will need to stem the blood loss – and pay less.  This creates an exciting opportunity for consultancies – specialists who can deliver on a part-time basis – say 2 to 3 days a week for a fraction of the original cost – ideally retaining or bringing back  employees who understand the nuances of their business.

A more flexible, on-demand, freelance resource is a logical solution.

ON-DEMAND DIGITAL EXPERTISE

Recognising the potential to help, together with Johnson BIM, we recently launched the help-a-start-up initiative to help the many BIM and digital specialists that are being made redundant.

Our ambition is to build the go-to, BIM expert directory to make it easier for employers to find the best BIM consultants for hire, on-demand.

Over the coming months, we will be widely promoting this initiative with the large network of clients Johnson BIM has grown over the last 32 years and the wider industry.

Recognising that many BIM specialists will find the idea of setting up as a consultant quite daunting, we’ve also secured pro-bono support. This community of specialists can help with business plans, funding, accountancy, marketing, graphic design and websites.

This on-demand-digital-expert-directory will offer consultants the opportunity to market themselves directly to hiring clients – without going through an agency and compromising on rates.

We have now started populating the directory and will begin creating awareness with clients from the beginning of June.  For more information, email mike@dbe.careers

I am determined to help anyone enthusiastic about their career in digital construction make the most of it. For 20 years I specialised in architectural recruitment before nailing my colours to the BIM mast in 2008. Hopefully, I have made a 'positive' difference to a few people's careers in that time. What I have learned over the years is that too much of the genuine talent is squandered. There is not enough information out there to help. It's out there but not shared. So, my solution is to find it and share it in this free knowledge 'hub' for anyone working in the Digital Built Environment - or thinking about joining us. If it doesn't deliver what you want - let me know!
