Doubling your potential with Digital Twins

If you want to be at the vanguard of digital construction evolution, Digital Twins will be part of your future.

In the UK, the National Digital Twin Programme, a partnership between the University of Cambridge and Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy is testament to that, with support from major organisations and institutions across the industry.

WHY DO WE NEED DIGITAL TWINS?

Understand the limitations of BIM and you will know why we need digital twins. BIM was initially envisaged to facilitate the effective exchange of information between segregated silos.

Design and construction stages project data has increased almost exponentially since BIM adoption, experiencing what is termed ‘drowning in data’ and providing little added benefit to the industry.

In the drive for a smarter built environment, the inclusion of IoT and AI is demanded to deliver improved energy efficiency and lower operation costs. With static, closed data, BIM represents only a narrow building-level view within the wider environmental context.

A digital twin factors in dynamic data to create a more holistic and process-oriented characterisation of the asset.

Advanced digital twins use two-way interactions with their physical counterparts. This allows for the asset to be controlled remotely – or even autonomously maintained – by its digital twin.

In the long term, digital twins could be connected to a network of twins. These would interact and share data to improve overall performance and better inform decision-making to meet wider challenges such as climate change.

A DIGITAL TWIN CAREER

Smart countries, cities and buildings require digital twins. The challenge will be finding people with the right skills. This creates opportunity for the career centric.

Until there is a sufficient pool of digital twin specialists, which will take a long time, the demand will be for BIM and data specialists with an AECO background. Employers will be global, dynamic and thought leading.

CURRENT OPPORTUNITIES

Leading the way in digital twins today is Willow, a global technology company with offices in Sydney, Melbourne, Seattle, New York, London, Utrecht, Manila, Tel Aviv, and Moscow. Enjoying success around the world, Willow are currently hiring for Digital Engineering roles in Australia, US, Canada and the Philippines – they’re looking for leaders…

I am determined to help anyone enthusiastic about their career in digital construction make the most of it. For 20 years I specialised in architectural recruitment before nailing my colours to the BIM mast in 2008. Hopefully, I have made a 'positive' difference to a few people's careers in that time. What I have learned over the years is that too much of the genuine talent is squandered. There is not enough information out there to help. It's out there but not shared. So, my solution is to find it and share it in this free knowledge 'hub' for anyone working in the Digital Built Environment - or thinking about joining us. If it doesn't deliver what you want - let me know!
